Help On Hearing Treatment

July 19th, 2010

People don’t think that they will ever lose their sense of hearing. Regardless what people think, hearing disorders can affect people of any age, gender or race. The important thing is to educate people on the causes of hearing loss then on how it can be treated.

As a birth defect, hearing loss is a very big problem as it has been proven to be the most common birth defect among babies. Everyone can get hearing disorders and this means children, teenagers too. Some of the other causes are trauma, noise pollution and being sick with another disease.

Loud environmental noise often is the culprit when it comes to a person losing his or her sense of hearing. Airports, construction sites, concerts are all environments with very loud noises that can damage a person. Things like the use of guns, tools that emit very loud noises even if just for a burst of time are dangerous too.

Hearing aids are a common and proven way to effectively treat hearing impairment. There are many different kinds of hearing aids available. One similar trait among all hearing aids is that it is an electro acoustic device that collects and amplifies sounds.

How and where exactly the hearing aid is supposed to be worn determine its classification. A device that is worn behind the ear is called BTE and is usually just made up of a case, tube and ear molds. The BTE’s main advantage is that the whole device is not worn inside and cannot be affected by moisture or even earwax.

Cochlear implants are another type of hearing aid and this device is implanted into you to replace your malfunctioning cochlear. A cochlear implant needs to be surgically implanted as it is placed underneath the scalp area just behind the ear. The bionic ear is made to work similarly like the real cochlea and that is to gather the surrounding sound, convert these into electronic impulses, then transmits these to the brain through electrodes.

Cochlear implants are made of a microphone, speech processor, transmitter, converter and electrodes. Only developed and rich countries are able to provide patients with this implant option as it is a very expensive procedure. Aside from the huge price tag, a person’s hearing history, health, and other minor things are checked to see if the implants will have a high chance of success.

Doctor’s are also excited by a new form of technology called gene therapy. Gene therapy is a natural solution wherein new cochlea cells are grown for specific people. Gene therapy is the hope of tomorrow and is still a new science today.

There is nothing like preventing hearing loss in the first place, but when all else fails these hearing treatments may be the answer. There are many types of hearing treatments available, and the only way to find out which one is for you is to find a doctor. Life just isn’t the same when you can’t hear a thing.
